In Psalm 27 the psalmist tells us: “The Lord IS MY LIGHT and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is my strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” The Lord is my Light. When you think of the word Light it means different things to different people. It is a very visual word some of you may instantly think of the Sun, or a lamp or light bulb. Some of you may think of a light color like yellow or some of you may think of a light weight like a feather. If you are a critical thinker you may think of light as the technical term. And all thoughts are accurate yet all are unique to each one of us.
The word Light can be used in multiple tenses, Light can be a noun meaning “something that makes vision possible” “the sensation aroused by stimulation of visual receptors”. Light can be an adjective meaning “having light, Bright” “not dark, intense, or swarthy in color” “not heavy”. And Light can be a verb “brighten”, “to take fire”, “to ignite”. Again the Word of God tells us that God is Light, which means God is many things to many people all encompassing. I want to start with the noun form of the word Light “something that makes vision possible”; “the sensation aroused by Stimulation of visual receptors” this in the technical form is the absence of darkness. It is the electromagnetic radiation of wave lengths that travel about 186,000 miles per second. In the beginning Genesis 1:3&4 God said Let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light: and it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. God created light and then he separated it from the darkness that the 2 would not dwell together. We know in our own experience that you can’t have light and darkness because Light overcomes darkness. When you walk into a dark room the first thing you typically do is flip on the light switch and immediately the darkness flees and light powers over the room. We naturally don’t want to wonder around in the darkness it is challenging for us to see. We are at risk of falling over something in our path or being hurt or injured. Often times in the darkness we feel afraid, we are limited and restricted of what we can do, how fast we can go, and what we can accomplish. There is unknown in the darkness which causes fear. God gave us light, God is light and He gave himself to us that we may see. God’s gift of his son Jesus to this world overcame all darkness and it is through this faith of Jesus that we are able to see past the darkness and into the light of His Hope, Love and unending promises of His Goodness for our life. God gave us the gift of vision to see how to live in freedom, liberty, through Christ alone. It is this knowledge and awareness of Life vs. Death. John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 9 that was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
So today if you are reading this and you feel like you are stumbling around in the dark, I encourage you to seek the Light of Jesus Christ in your life.
In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
